Chinese Firms Drive Global Glass Innovation with Giant Energy-Saving Panels and Ultra-Thin Flexible Tech

2026 01/17

Nantong & Bengbu, June 20, 2025 – China’s glass manufacturing sector is leading a global technological revolution, with breakthroughs in ultra-large energy-saving glass and ultra-thin flexible glass (UTG) redefining industry standards. Companies including Haojing Group and Kaisheng Technology have launched cutting-edge products that blend sustainability, intelligence, and extreme performance, powering applications from landmark buildings to next-generation electronics.
Haojing Group, a specialized and sophisticated enterprise in China’s glass deep-processing industry, recently made headlines by securing a Guinness World Record for the largest single-piece glass building facade. The achievement came after the company developed 20m×3.3m giant energy-saving glass panels, a feat that had long been a dream for the industry. Each panel weighs 5.3 tons and incorporates advanced vacuum magnetron sputtering coating technology, which deposits layers of silver, metal nitrides, and oxides to create a dense film. This film allows high transmission of visible and near-infrared light while reflecting mid- and far-infrared heat, delivering exceptional thermal insulation and energy efficiency.
The road to creating these giant panels was fraught with challenges. Haojing’s team had to modify transportation racks to safely deliver the 20-meter-long raw glass and develop new tools like large-size glass transfer devices—one of which earned a utility model patent. For curved versions of the giant glass, the company collaborated with equipment manufacturers to upgrade bending and tempering machinery. These innovations have already been put to use in high-profile projects, including supplying 26,000 square meters of triangular shaped energy-saving glass for the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Shanghai Yaoxue Ice and Snow World, where the panels reduce cooling energy consumption significantly.
Another trailblazer, Kaisheng Technology based in Bengbu, has achieved a major milestone in ultra-thin flexible glass (UTG), a critical material for flexible displays. After five years of research and development, the company’s UTG products boast a bending lifespan exceeding one million times and can be folded repeatedly without damage—setting a domestic leading standard. Kaisheng has established a fully independent industrial chain covering "high-strength glass, ultra-thin slicing, high-precision processing, and flexible lamination" and is now supplying top domestic terminal brands and flexible OLED panel manufacturers. The company’s UTG production lines are operating at full capacity, with plans to reach an annual output of 15 million pieces by the end of 2025.
Intelligent manufacturing has become a cornerstone of these innovations. At Haojing’s Haimen base, a 399-meter-long Bühler Leybold optical coating production line—the world’s longest and most advanced—enables uniform coating of over 20 nanometer-scale layers. The workshop operates with minimal human intervention, as automated production lines handle cutting, edging, and cleaning, while robots tackle complex shaped glass processing. From raw material storage to finished product delivery, every link is precisely managed by an intelligent system, boosting efficiency and ensuring consistent quality. This smart transformation has helped Haojing achieve an 83.2% year-on-year growth in sales from January to August 2024.
The glass industry’s shift toward sustainability is also gaining momentum. Haojing’s energy-saving glass products have been certified as China Green Products and Green Building Materials, and the company was honored as an Influential Enterprise in Low-Carbon Construction in 2024. Its ultra-low-energy-consumption glass played a crucial role in helping a Shanghai residential project pass ultra-low-energy building certification after a one-month rush order to replace 750 sets of windows. Meanwhile, Bengbu, a hub for glass innovation, has fostered a cluster of high-tech glass enterprises, producing breakthrough products like 0.12mm ultra-thin float electronic glass, CIGS solar glass, and neutral borosilicate glass tubes for vaccines.
Overseas expansion and industrial diversification are next on the agenda for these Chinese firms. Haojing is venturing into automotive coated glass, aiming to achieve 130 million yuan in sales by 2027. In Bengbu, Anhui Wuyao Automobile Glass Co., Ltd.—a joint venture project with a total investment of 2 billion yuan—is set to become China’s largest automotive glass production base, with an annual capacity of 4 million sets upon completion of both phases. This project fills a gap in Anhui’s automotive industry chain and will supply full sets of glass for new energy vehicles.
Lin Jiang, Chairman of Haojing Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation: "Creating 20-meter giant energy-saving glass was once a distant dream, but through relentless R&D, we’ve turned it into reality. We will continue to push the boundaries of glass technology to meet the evolving needs of the construction and automotive industries." Yang Jinfa, Deputy Chief Engineer of Kaisheng Technology, added, "Innovation is our core driver. We will keep exploring new application scenarios for UTG to contribute to China’s advanced display industry."
As global demand for energy-efficient and high-performance glass surges, Chinese manufacturers are transitioning from followers to leaders, leveraging technological innovation to shape the future of the global glass industry.
